At FJ&B Engineering Consultants, sustainability sits at the heart of what we do. As a team of MEP engineers, we recognise that our design choices play a key role in shaping a more energy-efficient, environmentally responsible built environment.

To further our collective knowledge and spark fresh ideas, we recently hosted a Sustainability Initiative Morning, focused on Sustainable MEP Solutions — exploring how innovation, teamwork, and practical thinking can drive greener outcomes in our projects.

1. Presentation & Discussion

We began the morning with an engaging presentation introducing the fundamentals of sustainable MEP design, alongside an overview of the UK’s direction and regulations on green buildings. To bring these principles to life, we looked at some of Europe’s most pioneering sustainable developments — including Bloomberg HQ (London), One Angel Square (Manchester), and The Edge (Amsterdam).

The session set the stage for meaningful discussions around how FJ&B can continue to align our designs with best practice and emerging environmental standards.

2. The Scenario Challenge

Next, our teams took on a real-world design challenge — applying their knowledge, creativity, and problem-solving skills to develop sustainable building services solutions for different building layouts.

Each team had just 10 minutes to brainstorm and five minutes to pitch their ideas to our “client,” played brilliantly by Felix. The exercise brought out some truly innovative thinking, with teams competing for recognition in categories such as most creative, most practical, and most sustainable solution.

3. From Theory to Practice: Plantroom Walkaround

To round off the morning, we headed to a live plantroom to put our insights into action. The goal was to assess existing systems and identify opportunities for improvement — from more efficient energy use to alternative low-carbon solutions.

This hands-on exercise reinforced how sustainability can be embedded not just in new design, but also through thoughtful retrofits and operational efficiency.

At FJ&B, initiatives like this reflect our ongoing commitment to continuous learning and to engineering a more sustainable future. By sharing knowledge and challenging ourselves as a team, we continue to deliver designs that are not only technically excellent but also environmentally responsible.
